Manchester United and Liverpool chase Ajax star

Manchester United will challenge Liverpool's attempts to sign Ajax wonderkid Christian Eriksen in the summer.
The 18-year-old has been tracked by Liverpool since making his debut for the Amsterdam club 12 months ago and they were lining up a £10m bid for his services at the end of the season. However, a stand out performance for Denmark in their international friendly defeat against England on Wednesday night has showcased his ability to prosper at the very highest level. Playing in the traditional number 10 role, Eriksen was a constant menace to the visitors' defence sending in an inviting cross for Daniel Agger to score the opening goal of the game and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet himself when he crashed a fierce low drive against the inside of Joe Hart's left hand post.

His display merely confirmed what the majority of Europe's top club's thought already and United are ready to make an offer to bring him to Old Trafford. With Paul Scholes in the twilight of his career with the Red Devils, there is a yawning gap for a central playmaker and having been rebuffed in their attempts to sign Mesut Ozil andWesley Sneijder, Untied will move heaven and earth to make sure they don't let another precious talent escape them.

This all spells bad news for Liverpool as Sir Alex Ferguson's club, in much the same manner that they pursued a teenage Wayne Rooney, will bid up to £25m to get their man and they will also have the added carrot of Champions League football, unless Liverpool can go on a miraculous run between now and the end of the season.
