Chelsea fail in bid to land Argentine playmaker

Chelsea have failed in a bid to sign 21-year-old Argentine playmaker Javier Pastore from Palermo, according to the Italian club's president Maurizio Zamparini. The midfielder, who has seen his stock rise in recent months following a superb season in which he has scored 11 times in Serie A, is also thought to be wanted by Manchester City, Barcelona and Real Madrid."Chelsea was a club that we had a major offer from,'' Zamparini told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser. "It did not reach the minimum figure that we set for a player of his quality.
"If somone wants to buy Pastore, the price is €50 million [£44m]. There are five or six clubs also interested, including [Manchester] City and big clubs from Spain and Italy but so far there has been nothing from them."

The attacking midfielder started his career at Talleres and joined Palermo in July of 2009 via Huracan. Following two successful campaigns in Italy, where he was named Serie A Young Player of the Year in 2010, it appears the club will have to fend off bids for his services this summer.
