Chelsea 3-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Chelsea secured a comfortable win over Wolves as Juan Mata produced a fine display, setting up two goals and scoring one himself. The early nerves around Stamford Bridge were settled after just seven minutes, John Terry powering a header home from a Mata corner past Wayne Hennessey in the Wolves goal to help banish the miserable memories of the last few weeks from the Chelsea fans' minds. Mata and Ramires spurned subsequent chances to boost the home side's lead, but the Blues kept pushing forward in numbers and were rewarded with a fine second goal after 29 minutes. Daniel Sturridge was the man to grab the Blues' second, the lively Mata swinging in a sublime cross from the left that was met by the boot of the in-form striker, who carried his impressive performance from midweek in Germany into today's fixture. Minutes later, David Edwards headed just wide for Wolves after good build-up play from George Elokobi, but the gulf in attacking class between the sides was laid clear for all to see as Sturridge forced a fingertip save from Hennessey before Mata fired a flicked volley against the back of the net after great work from Ashley Cole. Chelsea started the second half in the same manner as they ended the first, Ramires firing a lovely long-range shot towards goal that forced another good save from Hennessey. Wolves' attacking output remained miserable, although Stephen Ward did drag a shot just wide of the post with a right-footed attempt out of nowhere shortly after the half time break. Chelsea continued pushing forward for a fourth goal, Drogba drilling a shot just wide of the post before Sturridge and Mata forced a fine double save from Hennessey. Petr Cech was forced to look lively when Matt Jarvis and Steven Fletcher forced him to make a similarly impressive double save, but that was the sum of Wolves' attacking threat in a match made easy for Chelsea by a miserable display from the away side. The win may well have provided some temporary answers to Chelsea's critics, but Andre Villas-Boas's men will have far sterner tests sent their way in the weeks to come.
