Bolton star in "stable" condition

Tottenham player Rafael van der Vaart prays on the pitch for Fabrice Muamba
Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba is in a stable condition in a London hospital after collapsing on the pitch against Tottenham. The former England under-21 international fell to the ground suddenly, with no one else around him, just before half-time in today's FA Cup quarter-final clash at White Hart Lane. Medics were ushered onto the field to attend to the stricken Wanderers star as it quickly become clear that something was very wrong with the 23-year-old. Team doctors from both clubs spent ten minutes treating him as 35,000 fans inside the stadium watched on anxiously along with millions at home who had tuned in to watch the cup tie. Both sets of players were visibly upset by what they were witnessing and referee Howard Webb responded to their concern by taking the decision to abandoned the match. Spurs forward Rafeal van der Vaart was captured praying to the heavens and later wrote on Twitter: "Terrible what happened with Muamba during the game. We're all praying for him," while his team-mate Jermain Defoe posted: "Pray for Fab. God willing he will pull through." Medical staff gave Muamba mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and tried to revive him with a defibrillator, before he was rushed to hospital in an ambulance in the company of Bolton manager Owen Coyle and club captain Kevin Davies. Information about his condition is now starting to filter through, following an initial statement issued by Bolton soon after the incident. A Bolton spokesman said: "Fabrice Muamba has been taken to hospital following his collapse. There is no further information at this time." At the time of writing, a fresh update was being prepared by the club and the hospital regarding the player's well being. American international Stuart Holden has already taken to his Twitter account, to offer his support for his Trotters team-mate. "Praying for you Fab. Hope he's OK. Thoughts with him and his family. For all those asking, I know as much as you do. Waiting anxiously for updates from teammates. Fab is a fighter!"
