The Sunday Mirror suggests that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is set to bid for Bolton’s Gary Cahill as he tries to bolster the centre of his defence. However, the Arsenal manager may end up paying more than he would like.
Wenger is down to just two fit centre-backs – Johann Djourou and Laurent Koscielny – after fitness setbacks for Sebastien Squillaci and Thomas Vermaelen. The Belgian in particular is some way off fitness after suffering a setback last weekend in his recovery from an Achilles injury.
Cahill is rated by Bolton at around £20 million but is said to have a release clause in his contract reported at between £15 million and £17.5 million following his England debut earlier this season. However, the Mail On Sunday suggests Wenger is willing to pay no more than £8 million for the 25-year-old.
